International Yoga Day
International Yoga Day is celebrated annually on 21 st June since its inception in 2015. Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi proposed the idea of International Yoga Day during his speech at the UNGA, on 27th September 2014. He in his speech stated about yoga and its importance in embodying the unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. In his UN address, Mr Narendra Modi suggested the date of 21 st June as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares special significance in many parts of the globe. Since then every year International Yoga Day is being celebrated with full enthusiasm in our country as well as around the world.
Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice which originated in ancient India. It is derived from Sanskrit root “Yuj” which means “union”. Yoga mainly focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. Its main aim is to bring self-realisation to overcome all kinds of human suffering leading to “Moksha” or state of liberation. It brings the union of mind and body. It comprises of meditation, breathing exercises, poses for relaxation and to reduce stress.
Nowadays yoga is practised in various forms around the world and its popularity is growing tremendously among the people of the world. This day is celebrated to bring awareness and benefits of yoga and adopting it in our lifestyle. The first International Day of Yoga was celebrated all over the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with 35,985 people performed yoga at Rajpath in New Delhi. 21 yoga asanas for 35 minutes were performed. Every year this day is celebrated worldwide.
The theme for 2018 International Yoga Day is ‘Yoga for Peace’. People around the world are preparing to celebrate this year’s UN International Yoga Day. This year’s yoga day celebrations will be hosted by Dehradun. The event is expected to be a Mass Yoga Demonstration.
