World No Tobacco Day
We all are familiar with the caption “Tobacco Kills”. Nearly 7 million deaths occur annually worldwide, including 900,000 of which are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. Tobacco has taken many lives and is harmful to health. Lung cancer and lung diseases are caused by tobacco. Its use has a predominantly negative impact on human health. It is a global epidemic among the young people. It is one of the most abused and addictive substances used in the world. The chemical Nicotine in tobacco is an addictive substance.
Tobacco was first discovered by the native people of South America and Mesoamerica. Tobacco has long been used in America with some cultivation sites in Mexico during 1400-1000 BC. Soon after that, it got its popularisation as a trade item in Europe and various parts of the world.
Tobacco is prepared from the leaves of the tobacco plant. The leaves are dried and fermented before being put in tobacco products. There are more than 70 species of tobacco is known. The plant is of Genus Nicotiana and Family Solanaceae. The chief commercial plant is N. Tabacum. The dried tobacco leaves are mainly used for Smoking Cigarettes, Cigars, Pipe Tobacco, Beedi, Creamy Snuff, Gutka, Dokha, Hookah, Kreteks, Sniff, Chewing Tobacco, Dipping Tobacco, Tobacco Water and Snus.
In the mid 20th century, following the scientific revelations of Tobacco, it was condemned as a health hazard as well as a major cause of cancer and other respiratory and circulatory diseases. It affects the heart, liver and lungs. Tobacco smoke contains around 50 chemicals that cause cancer. Smoking is a major risk factor for heart attacks, lung cancers, strokes, emphysema, obstructive pulmonary disease, cancers of the mouth and larynx, bladder cancer and also causes high blood pressure.
It also causes miscarriages among pregnant smokers and contributes to a number of health problems of the fetus such as premature birth, low birth weight and might cause the death of the infant.
The WHO, therefore, created No Tobacco Day to draw the attention of the people towards the negative health effects of tobacco. It is observed on 31st May globally. The main intention is to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco products. World No Tobacco Day is one of the eight official public health campaigns. The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2018 is “Tobacco and Heart Disease”. WNTD 2018 will focus mainly on the impact of tobacco on cardiovascular health. It aims to create awareness among the people on how tobacco causes diseases like coronary heart diseases, stroke and many more. To provide opportunities for the people and government to make a commitment to promote heart health by protecting people from use of tobacco products.
