National Science Day

National Science Day is celebrated every year on 28th February. It is the main science Celebration day of India.  This day is celebrated to mark the discovery of RAMAN EFFECT on 28th February 1928 by Indian Physicist and Noble Prize winner Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman.  Also, know as C.V Raman was awarded the Noble Prize in Physics in 1930.
Sir C.V.Raman was a Tamil Brahmin. He worked from 1907 to 1933 at the Indian Association for Cultivation of Science, Kolkata, West Bengal during which he had researched on many topics of Physics from which the Raman Effect became his great success and its discovery has been marked in the Indian history.
To commemorate and honour this event in the future, 28th February was asked to the Indian Government to designate as a National Science Day in India by National Council for Science and Technology Community (NCSTC) in the year 1986. Since then, the National Science Day is been celebrated across the country.
From the year 2013, the Raman Effect has been designated as an International Historic Chemical Landmark by the American Chemical Society.
This day is celebrated every year to make people aware of the beauty and importance of science in our daily life. Every one of us is dependent on science and its uses. We are surrounded by scientific applications. This day is celebrated to display all the efforts and achievements in the field of science for human welfare. The main objective of this day is to discuss the science related issues and implementation of new technologies for the development and progress of both sciences as well as the community. People are needed to be encouraged and make them aware of it.
In schools and colleges, Science Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Students demonstrate various projects on science, research demonstrations, debates, quiz competition, live projects, lectures, science model exhibitions and many more activities. The celebration also includes TV talk shows, science movies, and public speeches. The Minister of Science and Technology gives the message through his speech on this day to students, scientists, researchers and to the general public.
Awards are given to people and institutions for popularizing science and for their efforts in their achievements.
In 2009 on National Science Day, five institutions were presented National Award for Science Community by Indian Department of Science and Technology (IDST).
Dr.Pramod Kumar Mohapatra, G.S. Unnikrishnan and Ms Meenu Khare were awarded Rs. 1, 00,000 for their individual contribution to the field.
Jidnyasa Trust of Thane also received Rs, 1, 00,000 for setting up a science activity centre.
The Vikram Sarabhai Community Science Centre was given the highest award in the year 2009 to recognise its big contribution to the science.
The theme for this year Science Day is
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE”. 



There are many institutions and organisations and people working in the field of science for the betterment of people and making lives of the people easier. This day gives the opportunity to the scientifically minded people and encourages them as well as helps in popularizing science in the country.
